2026 Commencement ceremony at Temple University as a candidate for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture was one of the greatest honors of my academic journey.

The past four years have been defined by persistence, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to my education and artistic practice. A fine arts degree is built through countless hours of making, researching, revising, and learning, and every critique, exhibition, and studio session has challenged me to grow as both an artist and a person.

This journey has unfolded while navigating Major Depressive Disorder with psychotic features. There were moments when simply arriving at class, processing information, or continuing my work required an extraordinary amount of determination. Those experiences have strengthened my conviction that creativity and resilience are deeply connected, and they continue to shape both my artistic practice and my commitment to mental health advocacy.

Standing alongside my classmates at commencement was a moment I will always remember. It represented years of perseverance, discipline, and hope, and it reminded me how meaningful it is to celebrate progress, even while the journey continues.

I am especially grateful to the handful of professors who challenged me, encouraged me, and believed in my potential throughout my time at Temple. Your guidance, patience, and faith in my abilities helped shape not only my work as an artist, but also my inspiration in continuing to pursue art as a lifelong practice. I carry those lessons with me with deep gratitude as I look toward the next chapter.

With love,

Maria
